Dr Evans graduated from Dundee University in 1998. He was one of the first graduates to complete General Professional Training, a two-year training programme which encompassed General Dental Practice, Edinburgh Dental Hospital and Community Clinics which offered him a valuable introduction into the different branches of dental care.
From there he worked in NHS and Private Dental Practices in Edinburgh and Glasgow before purchasing a General Practice in the Scottish Borders in 2007. Close links were forged between his practice and Vermilion through their ‘Refer and Restore’ implant programme. His practice is also a training practice for recently graduated dentists.
Dr Evans undertakes the following responsibilities at Vermilion:
- Initial implant consultations: for patients referred to Vermilion for dental implants, Dr Evans obtains the basic data set required to work up the case. This includes the history of presenting complaint, dental history including Previsor oral health assessment, dental charting, BPE, photography, radiography and intra-oral scan. Following this pre-assessment, patients progress to a more focused consultation with the prosthodontist and oral surgeon.
- Simple implant restorations: under the SAC classification (Simple, Advanced, Complex) where a patient is referred for a simple single implant crown, in appropriate cases the Vermilion oral surgeons may place the implant for Dr Evans to restore. Many referring colleagues are routinely using Vermilion’s “Refer and Restore” service whereby they restore their own patient’s implants and this remains unchanged; indeed we aim to continue to further develop this excellent programme.
- Implant maintenance: Dr Evans will carry out the annual reviews of implants placed at Vermilion, in collaboration with our hygienists. He will assess three areas: the condition of the crown/bridge/denture, oral hygiene status and radiographic assessment of marginal bone levels. Dr Evans will then write an annual report to the referring dentist. Most patients are followed up for four years.
In his spare time, Dr Evans is a qualified rugby coach, having coached children and adults in Scotland and Northumberland and for a time acting as a liaison officer for the Welsh Rugby Union.
